We began our journey to Robben Island on a fairly peaceful boat ride. Nobody was sick, which is somewhat abnormal for Team Blue! Many of us had a cheeky snooze in the sun while the others sang songs and took sneaky selfies (Murdies) with the scenery.
Once we arrived on solid ground again, we hopped onto a bus to take a tour round the island. We were shown the different sections of the prison and the graveyard of many who lost their lives to leprosy. We stopped to admire the scenery before heading inside for a tour around the main prison. We were all shocked at the facts we were presented with and the horrible conditions the prisoners faced. As the tour guide was an ex-prisoner of Robben Island he told us many staggering facts about his experiences in the prison. We were then shown the great Nelson Mandela's cell where he spent 18 out of his 27 years of imprisonment. We were all quite emotional after being confronted with the facts and first hand views of where so many were imprisoned.
The boat journey back was eventful, to say the least. Half of the team took the sensible option of sitting downstairs on the ferry to play cards and sleep, whereas the stupid people (as McGuck calls us) took up the offer of a free shower on the top deck! They were slightly wetter than they thought they would be! 50 minutes of continuous sea splash resulted in Boothy and the stupid people being completely drenched from top to toe and looking forward to the warmth of Mario's magnificANT braai.
We had an amazing day and none of us want to leave this beautiful country.
