Stiler, our excellent guide, uses the acronym BRELL to remember the safari 'big five', the hunter's trophies of old: buffalo, rhino, elephant, leopard and lion.
At Aquila Safari we see all five, although the leopard is in a cage, giving us a bit of an advantage - don't think we can count that one. The place is like Blair Drummond on steroids, with added sun. It is a private game reserve, so there is ultimately a fence bounding the vast area, but it feels very wild and real because for many of the animals this sprawling, dusty scrubland is their natural habitat. We are driven around and discover elephants arguing, springboks elegantly hopping through bushes, a hippo slumbering half-submerged in a watering hole and countless other wildlife.
The mid-safari stop for champagne (for the hard-working teaching staff) and biltong (beef jerky) adds a certain something to the experience, as do the infinity pool, extensive buffet and 5 star accommodation. School trips can be very tough.
