We arrived at the Welcome Primary School for the first time today and we were welcomed with an amazing assembly. As we walked into the playground where the assembly was held we were greeted with cheers and claps. The kids danced and sung for us. One of the dances was to Waka Waka, our Cape Town song. Also a young girl performed a Scottish dance for us. One of the teachers had a wee word of thanks to us and they mentioned the walk and how much it meant to them that we raised so much money and how big a difference it made to the whole school. Matt, Nick and James presented a computer, printer and sports equipment and all of their faces lit up. During the word of thanks so many of us cried at how big a difference we will make and how grateful they are for these things. We don't realise how big a difference these little things meant to them cause to us it's nothing.
We were then taken to the staff room where we were treated to some amazing food, including fresh pineapple juice, fish and chips, coconut cake, sweets and chicken drumsticks. We got to go into some classes and me (Zoe) & Amy were sent to a Grade 6 class who were doing science and technology. We got to take part in a wee test about the solar system and we got 9/10. The kids told us what they aim to be when they were older, and it was really nice to hear things like lawyers, social workers, chefs and dancers. We then spoke to the teacher about the issues they face in the school, including lack of chalk, broken equipment and how happy the kids are to use computers as many don't have access at home. One little girl was surprised to hear I've got stairs in my house and my own bedroom, and many of them were very enthusiastic about Scotland, even telling us they want to live there.
After the school we went along the road to the GCU Academy where we got the choice to play football, softball or dance. I (Amy) went to dance with a couple of other girls. A man with a funky Afro let me show him my jellyfish move. He taught us a dance which was pretty groovy and hip. To end the dance we all broke out into my jellyfish move even Ms Murray joined in. I ( Zoe) went to play football and ended up being about as useful as a pig on the moon... However the kids were really talented and obviously had a lot of passion for football. I just ran up and down the side like a linesman, it was pathetic! Then me & Amy reunited to do a quick drama workshop based on expressing emotion. We had to react to scenarios the man provided us with and it was funny to see James given a real life scenario where his trousers had ripped. Fair to say, we seen a lot of James's bum today #WeeBitSassy. We then had to do a smoking prevention play where we had to play African animals, it was about peer pressure and doing what's right. This makes an impact as most of them start smoking from a very early age, around Grade 3/4 which is the equivalent to P7 at home. We plan to present this short play to the primary on Friday.
Overall we had a great start to the connection between Balwearie and Welcome Primary School and we're all really excited for the rest of this week!
Amy & Zoe :)
