Kiah and Katie, being the musicants, obviously had to teach music:
Our well travelled ukuleles accompanied us in our lessons with both grade 6 classes to teach children aged 12 to 13. Needless to say, we were nervous to begin with, but soon felt at ease with the kids who made us feel very welcome in their classrooms. We began by introducing ourselves and our instruments, as nobody, including Mr Jacibs the headteacher of Welcome Primary, had ever seen or heard of a ukulele. We sang them a song to which they clapped and danced to. Boothy also conducted "We Will Rock You" like a true champiant; King of the Ants. Then we taught them to sing along to "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean". We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs trying to put moves to the song. We let them try out the ukuleles themselves and taught them a few simple chords. It was amazing to see the smiles on their faces! :) We had a magnificant morning and took many a #selfie!
Karolina, being one of the drama queenants, paired with Rikke to teach the children their dramatic ways:
Walking into the classroom having no idea what we will happen we were nervous and excited. With a Grade 7 class everything could happen. During the first few moments of being in the classroom and introducing the kids to drama not everyone was confident in performing in front of the class so we decided that it would be a good idea to get the kids to do some tableaux (frozen pictures) to get them into the swing of things which told us a lot about what these kids grew up with, things like guns, violence which were both surprising and quite upsetting as they're only children. Rikke and I then introduced them to an improvisation excersise called 'Park Bench', it is an excercise where a character sits on a bench and another character has to get them to leave the bench through the use of movement, voice and facial expressions. After making fools of ourselves and making the kids laugh and feel confident with each other we asked them if they wanted to try it, firstly the kids weren't that comfortable with going up to the front of the class but after a lot of laughs more and more of them wanted to join in on the excersise until the whole class was completely happy with being silly, unfortunately we ran out of time and not everyone got a chance to participate :(. Overall, the kids throughly enjoyed themselves and let go of anything that was worrying them through drama. It was truly one of the best days of our lives as we could clearly see their happines through everything they did. We would like to thank Boothy as he helped Rikke and I during the whole lesson and was a great role model for the kids.
We think that it is fair to say that ourselves and the kids had a lot of fun today and can't wait for more lessons!
