Today was our second day at Welcome primary and it was our turn to be teachers. The kids were thrilled to see us again and we got loads of hugs, high fives and selfies. We headed to the staff room where there was an amazing spread of food set out for us, including cake, fruit and smoked snoek. We were split into pairs after being assigned either music, art, history or English to teach, and a class to teach it to. We were teaching art and history. Molly and Gemma taught a grade five class about William Wallace and they were excited to make a connection between him and Nelson Mandela. They loved drawing Wallace and the battle field at Stirling Bridge, and it was amazing to see them so enthusiastic about the lesson. Towards the end, the lessons turned into photo shoots and in some classes, they started singing us African songs.
Rebecca and Anna taught art to the grade one class, getting them to use their imagination to draw what they would have in their own fantasy world. Straight away they were excited to begin, the kids were great at drawing for the age they were, drawing things like castles, butterflies, motorbikes and sweets. As the lesson went on the kids grew more confident and started requesting we drew pictures for them, and crowds began to form. At the end we all made crowns out of paper, it was a great day!
