When I first heard about the trip to Cape Town back in 3rd year my initial thoughts were that it would be a great trip to a beautiful country but I did not expect it to be as emotional as it has been. My most memorable part of the visit to Cape Town was without a doubt working in Welcome Primary School. Mr Jacobs and all of the teachers and staff were very welcoming and the energy and happiness in all of the pupils is something that will stay with me forever. The children in the school have really inspired me because although they have very little, they come to school every day smartly dressed and eager to learn and improve their skills. Seeing how much of a difference we have made to the children already was really highlighted on the final day when we had to say our goodbyes. Grade 5A were a class who I spent most of my time with in the school and I left them on our final afternoon with every child in the class sobbing. Also the final assembly had me in tears when a girl in the 5A handed me a note... I couldn't bear reading it until I left the assembly but when I opened it I realised that as individuals and as a whole school we have made a difference and will always have a place in these children's hearts.
When I arrive back in Scotland and go back to school, I really hope to continue this connection with Welcome Primary and another visit to Cape Town and the school would be great!
As Mr McGuckin said months before we left "you make this trip" and in my opinion Team Burgundy definitely have. From having breakfast in the morning with everyone, and belting out 'tunes' in the mini bus', one thing I'm going to miss most about this trip will be waking up and spending the whole day with my Cape Town 'family'.
